Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell expressed hope Thursday for some kind of agreement to avoid the "fiscal cliff," and Republican aides said the House will reconvene Sunday -- only two days before the Jan. 1 deadline.
In a speech from the Senate floor, McConnell expressed frustration with President Barack Obama and Democrats, saying they squandered time to reach a deal. "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything Senate Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff," he said.
But he added that Republicans would listen to what Obama had to propose. "Hopefully there's still time for an agreement of some kind that saves the taxpayers from a wholly, wholly preventable economic crisis," McConnell said.
